Core Web Vitals for WordPress: a no nonsense guide

By Ali Yasin Jatoi 6 min readUpdated June 25, 2026

Quick answer

Core Web Vitals are three field measurements Google uses to judge user experience. LCP measures how fast the largest visible element loads, INP measures how snappy the page feels when you interact, and CLS measures how much the layout jumps as it loads. On WordPress, fix LCP with hero image work and edge caching, fix INP by removing heavy third party scripts, and fix CLS by setting explicit width and height on images and reserving space for ads.

Fixing LCP

Compress the hero image and serve it in WebP or AVIF.

Preload the hero image so it starts downloading immediately.

Move to a host with edge caching close to your audience.

Fixing INP

Audit third party scripts. Chat widgets and tag managers are usually the worst.

Defer non critical JavaScript until after first interaction.

Replace heavy page builders with lighter blocks where possible.

Fixing CLS

Always set width and height on images and embeds.

Reserve space for ad slots so they do not push content around.

Avoid loading custom fonts that swap in late and resize text.

Common questions

Where do I see my Core Web Vitals?+

Google Search Console reports field data from real Chrome users. PageSpeed Insights shows both field and lab data.

How long until improvements show in Search Console?+

Field data updates over a rolling twenty eight day window, so expect two to four weeks to see a change.
