The reason an Enfold update shows raw shortcodes on the front end is that Avia Layout Builder stores your page as shortcode strings, and a version bump can change how they parse. So we never update Enfold in place. Staging clone, full ALB export, update, then a template by template walk on your busiest pages, then production. If anything drifts, the ALB export goes back in and nobody outside the office sees it.

Enfold plus WooCommerce, where the styling actually breaks
Enfold ships its own WooCommerce templates. When Woo releases a template change, Enfold's copies go stale and the checkout quietly loses its responsive styling on mobile, which is where most of the abandoned carts come from. We diff Enfold's Woo template overrides against the current Woo version every quarter and update only the ones that changed, so checkout keeps working while the design stays yours.
Enfold on a site nobody has touched since 2017
That is most of them, and it is fine. Legacy Enfold is stable software. The risk is not the theme, it is the abandoned plugins around it and a PHP version the host is about to force. My Enfold site shows shortcodes instead of content, can you fix it?
Yes. That is an Avia Layout Builder parse failure, normally after an update or a partial migration. If there is a recent backup we restore the ALB data. If there is not, we repair the shortcode strings by hand. Either way it is emergency work from $249 and usually same day.
Is Enfold still safe to run in 2026?
Yes, Kriesi still ships updates and the theme is actively maintained. The risk on an old Enfold site is almost never the theme, it is the surrounding plugins that stopped updating years ago. That is the inventory we run first.

What is the Avia Layout Builder?+
Avia Layout Builder, often written as ALB or the Avia template builder, is the drag and drop page builder bundled with the Enfold theme by Kriesi. It stores every layout as Avia shortcodes inside the post content rather than as Gutenberg blocks, which is why an Enfold page opened without the theme active shows raw shortcode text. Avia is included with your Enfold licence, so there is nothing extra to buy.
Why is my Avia Layout Builder not loading or showing a blank editor?+
In almost every case we see, a JavaScript error is blocking the builder from booting. The usual culprits are a plugin enqueueing a second copy of jQuery, an outdated Enfold child theme on PHP 8, or a security plugin blocking the admin ajax endpoint Avia uses to save layouts. We isolate it by loading the editor with plugins disabled one at a time, then patch the offender rather than disabling the builder.
Can I switch from Avia Layout Builder to Gutenberg or Elementor without losing content?+
Yes, but not by flipping a switch. Avia shortcodes do not translate, so the safe route is to archive every ALB template as static HTML first, rebuild page by page on a staging copy, and diff the live and staging renders before cutover. We keep the old site serving traffic the entire time.
Is Enfold still actively developed?+
Yes. Kriesi ships regular updates and PHP-compatibility fixes, though the Avia Layout Builder itself has been slowly deprecated in favour of Gutenberg blocks. Existing Enfold sites are safe to keep running with active maintenance.
Can you help migrate an Enfold site to a modern theme?+
Yes, but only after we archive every ALB shortcode as static HTML so no content is lost in translation. Full migrations are quoted separately and always run in parallel with the live site until the diff is clean.
