WordPress problem fix
The editor freezes, says updating failed, or just shows a white screen. Your content is almost always safe. The cause is usually a plugin conflict or REST API error.
When the Gutenberg block editor crashes or freezes in WordPress, the cause is usually a plugin that registered a broken block, a REST API failure (so the editor cannot save), or a JavaScript error from a theme. Your existing content is almost always still safe in the database. We isolate the broken block, restore REST access, and clear the editor cache so your team can write again.
If any of these match, you are on the right page.
Editor shows the unexpected error and refuses to recover
Updating failed message on every save
Editor loads then freezes when you add a block
Blocks render in the editor but not on the front end
Custom block plugins (especially after updates) can throw a JS error that takes the whole editor down.
The editor saves through REST. If REST is blocked, every save fails. See our REST API guide.
Themes that have not been updated for WordPress 6.x can break editor scripts.
The real method, in the order it works.
Open the browser console and read the JS error
Deactivate block plugins one by one to find the bad one
Test the REST API endpoint to rule that out
Switch to a default theme temporarily to test the editor
Clear object cache and any optimizer JS aggregation
Real fix, from our work
An agency client lost the editor across 20 author accounts. We had everyone writing again in 40 minutes by deactivating a single custom block plugin.

Usually not. Recent autosaves are kept. We recover the latest version before doing anything destructive.
Only as a temporary workaround. Modern WordPress is built around Gutenberg.
