AEO and GEO: be the answer AI quotes, not the link it skips

AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini answer the question before anyone reaches your page. Getting cited is a structural job: a clear question, a short factual answer directly beneath it, an entity Google can identify, and data worth quoting. That is what this retrofit installs.

What happens in the first 30 days

No discovery phase that bills for a month. Work starts in week one and you see the crawl evidence for every claim.

  • Your top 20 pages identified from Search Console impressions, not from opinion
  • Every page restructured around real questions, taken from People Also Ask and your own query data
  • A short answer block of 40 to 60 words placed directly under each question, written to be lifted verbatim
  • FAQ and speakable schema applied and validated across the set
  • Entity clarity work: Organization and Person schema, a consistent sameAs graph, and an About page that matches
  • Original, citable statistics surfaced from your own data, because generative engines quote numbers with sources
  • An llms.txt summary file and a machine readable facts endpoint published on your domain
  • A baseline record of how you are currently mentioned, so we can compare in ninety days

What you are actually buying

Question led structure

H2s written as the question a buyer types, because that is the unit answer engines match against.

Extractable answer blocks

Short, self contained, factual answers that make sense when quoted with no surrounding page.

Entity file

Consistent naming, schema, and sameAs links so an assistant knows which business you are and does not merge you with another.

Citable data

Your own numbers, stated with methodology and a date, because that is what generative engines attribute rather than paraphrase.

Baseline and recheck

We record what assistants say about you now, and check again at ninety days across the major tools.

The honest limit: AI assistants choose sources from their own indexes and from live retrieval, and neither is a ranked list anyone can buy into. Clear structure and clean entity data measurably improve the odds of a citation. Nobody can guarantee one. llms.txt is not yet honoured by Google or OpenAI, so we treat it as cheap insurance, not a lever, and we say that rather than selling it as a breakthrough.

Is AEO just SEO with a new name?

It overlaps, and anyone claiming it is an entirely new discipline is selling a package. The real difference is the unit of success. Classic SEO wins a ranked position for a page. AEO wins an extracted answer, which means the passage has to stand alone, be short, and be factually checkable. GEO adds one more requirement: the model has to know who you are as an entity before it will attribute anything to you. Same craft, different output target.

Our own site publishes an llms.txt knowledge file and a machine readable facts endpoint, and every service page ships speakable markup. We build for ourselves first, then sell what worked.

Questions buyers actually ask

What is answer engine optimisation?

Answer engine optimisation is structuring content so a machine can lift a correct answer straight out of it. In practice that means a heading written as the exact question, a 40 to 60 word factual answer directly beneath it, no marketing language inside the answer, and schema that labels the block. It targets AI Overviews, featured snippets, and voice results rather than a ranked position.

What is the difference between AEO, GEO, and SEO?

SEO targets the ranked list of blue links. AEO targets the direct answer, whether that is an AI Overview, a featured snippet, or a voice result. GEO, generative engine optimisation, targets being cited inside generative tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity, which rewards entity clarity, original data, and quotable phrasing. One well built page can win all three.

How do I get my site cited by ChatGPT or Perplexity?

Three things move the odds. Be structurally extractable, meaning short factual answers under clear questions. Be identifiable as an entity, meaning consistent schema and profiles so the model knows who you are. Be worth quoting, meaning you publish original numbers with a method and a date rather than restating what everyone else wrote. Nobody can guarantee a citation, because retrieval and training are not open to purchase.

Does llms.txt actually work?

Not yet in any measurable way. No major assistant has committed to honouring it. It costs almost nothing to publish and it makes your key facts machine readable in one place, so we ship it as insurance rather than as a lever, and we would rather tell you that than charge you for it as a breakthrough.

Will AI Overviews kill my organic traffic?

They reduce clicks on informational queries where the answer is a fact, and they barely touch commercial queries where someone needs to hire or buy. The defensive move is to earn the citation on informational pages and to make sure your commercial pages are the ones an assistant recommends, which is entity work rather than content volume.

How do you measure AEO results?

We record a baseline of how the major assistants describe your business and which sources they cite for your core questions, then recheck at ninety days. Alongside that we watch Search Console impressions on question style queries and any featured snippet gains. It is less precise than rank tracking, and we present it that way instead of inventing a score.

Does schema still matter for AI search?

Yes, but for a different reason than it did in 2020. FAQ rich results are now restricted to a narrow set of authoritative sites, so schema is no longer a snippet play. It still functions as clean, unambiguous data for the systems building an entity graph around your brand, which is exactly what a generative engine consults before attributing anything to you.
